Sarcoidosis

Sjögren’s Syndrome is a chronic autoimmune disorder in which the body’s immune system mistakenly attacks its own moisture-producing glands.

This condition primarily affects the salivary and lacrimal (tear) glands, leading to symptoms such as dry mouth and dry eyes. Sjögren’s can occur on its own (primary Sjögren’s) or in conjunction with another autoimmune disease, such as rheumatoid arthritis or lupus (secondary Sjögren’s).

What Are the Signs/Symptoms?

Symptoms of sarcoidosis vary depending on the organs involved. Common signs and symptoms include:

General Symptoms

• Fatigue

• Fever

• Unexplained weight loss

• Night sweats

Pulmonary Symptoms

• Persistent dry cough

• Shortness of breath

• Chest pain

Skin Symptoms

• Reddish, tender bumps (erythema nodosum) typically on the shins

• Discolored lesions

Eye Symptoms

• Blurred vision

• Eye pain or redness

• Sensitivity to light

Other Symptoms

• Irregular heart rhythms

• Joint pain or swelling

• Neurological symptoms such as headaches or weakness

What Are Common Treatments?

Treatment for sarcoidosis depends on the severity of the disease and the organs affected. Many cases resolve on their own without treatment, but others require medical intervention. Options include:

• Observation: For asymptomatic or mild cases.

• Medications:

  • Corticosteroids (e.g., prednisone) to reduce inflammation.

  • Immunosuppressive drugs such as methotrexate or azathioprine.

• Lifestyle Modifications: Healthy diet, regular exercise, and smoking cessation.

• Surgical Intervention: Rarely required, but organ transplants may be necessary in severe cases involving lung or heart failure.
